Dramatic readings, musical motions, and important news about what WLA has planned: The WLA Annual Business Meeting will be held Thursday, November 3, in conjunction with the annual conference in downtown Milwaukee. WLA is required to hold an annual business meeting, and though you're not required to attend, all WLA members are encouraged to do so. Not a WLA member? You can still attend, though only WLA members may vote.WLA President Rhonda Puntney will share the highlights of the year, which has been more memorable and event-filled than most. President-elect Ron McCabe will share plans for 2012. And in between, you'll hear reports from other leaders, including WLA Foundation President Jane Pearlmutter, and have a chance to learn more about what your association has been doing for libraries and the profession.To get an agenda and read the 2010 meeting minutes, go to the WLA Board web page....

Every year at the WLA Conference we like to ask our attendees to give back something to their community to enhance others lives.  In the past we have sponsored food drives, but even though that is a wonderful gesture, the reality is that food isn’t always that easy to lug around in your suitcase as you trundle off to the conference.  Well, this year we’ve decided to support a worthwhile cause that only asks that you consider donating an item that as librarians should be pretty easy to come up with.  Bring a book! Hey, it’s much easier than carrying a bag of food to the Conference. The Association of Wisconsin Special Librarians (AWSL) is pleased to announce it will sponsor ascholarship to the Wisconsin Library Association Annual Conference, November 1-4, Milwaukee.Criteria:  The scholarship is available to library staff who are: 1) currently employed in a library orinformation agency in Wisconsin OR currently a student in library school interested in employment in a special library setting; 2) able to communicate via the AWSL newsletter about their experiences at the conference; and 3) currently a member of the WLA and AWSL.Application process:  Applicants must  1) complete the scholarship application form, and 2) write a one page document explaining their reasons for wanting to attend this particular conference (refer to the WLA conference web site to review conference programs.) The “City of Four Lakes” has excitement and a lot to offer. But don’t take our word for it….see it for yourself! Registration is now open for the “Survive and Thrive” 2011 WAPL Conference. This year’s conference will be held May 4-6 at the Sheraton Hotel in Madison. “We have a well-rounded and outstanding selection of programs available this year,” said Brian Kopetsky, conference chair. “Librarians in the public sector will be pleased with what’s offered.” Kicking things off on Thursday, May 5, will be keynote Tom Peters. Peters is the founder and CEO of TAP Information Services in Missouri. If you plan to attend “WAAL 2011: Renew, Energize, Sustain” (April 26-29 in Stevens Point), please consider volunteering. The YSS Book Discussion will be held Thursday (November 4) at 4 p.m. This is your chance to participate in a book discussion led by librarians from the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC). WLA Foundation Fundraiser — Bowling & Boards!! (Kalahari Resort Bowling Center, Wednesday, November 3, 8:00 – 11:00 pm) If you haven’t already signed up for this event in advance on your conference registration form, sign up onsite at the Conference (no later than 5 PM Wednesday). Admission to this event ($35 per person) includes a donation to the WLAF, one drink ticket (good for beer, wine or soda), snacks, pizza and a fun evening with friends and colleagues. Contact Bernie Bellin to register your team of four bowlers OR boarders (prior to October 31st) and each member will get one ADDITIONAL beverage ticket (which you’ll receive when you arrive at the event).
