“Photographs and memories, Christmas cards you sent to me, All that I have are these to remember you…” Jim Croce released this poignant song in 1972 and so many years later, generations of people have boxes of memories in closets, basements and old photo albums, gathering dust, but too precious to discard. Jen Gerber, Library Director at the Oscar Grady Public Library, had an idea. “Can I do something with these memories?” Like others, Gerber had boxes of old family photographs, 8 mm film and VHS tapes that she wanted to digitize and protect, but didn’t want to spend buckets of money to convert the images to digital files. So she started doing some research and discovered that it was not only possible to provide an affordable way to convert images to digital files, but within reach with the help of a $5000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library...

Register onsite! Government Information Day 2015 will take place on May 29, in Room 126, Memorial Library on the UW-Madison Campus, and we want to hear from you! For the program this year, we are trying something a little different. We would like to do a “Best Practices Exchange” in which we invite conference attendees to share what they are doing in their libraries. Some suggested topics:  Has your library created any libguides or databases on local government, or any other government information topic? Has your library done any digitizing of government information (local or otherwise)? What practices, reference or technical services, do you use in your library to help make your job more efficient? The advance registration deadline for WAPL 2015: Ride the Rapids of Change, May 6-8, has been extended until May 1st! Be sure to register by May 1st to take advantage of pre-conference registration discounts -- an onsite registration surcharge will apply if you register onsite. Also, there will be no onsite registration for meals, so to attend the breakfasts and author luncheons you must register by May 1st. Martin was nominated by members of the Madison Public Library staff based on his commitment to free access to information, his ability to form partnerships and his creativity in his many outreach efforts. Martin’s wide-ranging skills and abilities make him an ideal candidate for the 2015 Paralibrarian. The Paralibrarian of the Year Award was created to recognize the contributions made by paralibrarians and support staff, and to help them further their education through a scholarship to aid in the completion of a bachelor’s of science degree in Information Science and Technology or a Master of Library and Information Science degree through UW-Milwaukee School of Information Studies (UW-Milwaukee SOIS) The Wisconsin Library Association Paralibrarian of the Year Award recognizes the essential role of paralibrarians, including all library support staff, who do not currently have an MLIS in providing excellent library service in Wisconsin.
