125 years ago, on February 11, 1891, a group of individuals gathered in the office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (located in Wisconsin's second Capitol) for the purpose of establishing a state library association.  At that meeting, a constitution was adopted and officers were elected. The officers included K. A. Linderfelt, president; R. G. Thwaites, vice-president; and F. A. Hutchins, secretary-treasurer. By this action, the Wisconsin Library Association became the sixth state library association created in the nation.   The 125 years of library leadership and support by the association has had a positive impact on all types of Wisconsin libraries and on the library service delivered by those libraries to the people of Wisconsin. As Wisconsin libraries look to the future, it is also a time to acknowledge the tremendous library growth and development that has occurred in the last 125 years. Through good times and hard times...

Library History Buff Larry Nix, an invaluable member of the WLA 125th Anniversary Task Force, compiled a timeline of HIGHLIGHTS in the history of our association.  It is, of necessity, a selective list of significant events that have taken place since 1891.  Did you know, for example, that the meeting to create the Wisconsin Library Association took place in the state capitol?  Or that in 1923, thanks to its members' lobbying, Wisconsin was the first state to pass legislation to establish public librarian certification.     The task force plans to take a closer, decade-by-decade look at WLA's history as this anniversary year progresses.   To keep up-to-date about this year's celebration and learn more about WLA's history, please subscribe to the Wisconsin Library Heritage Center blog. ...

The day’s agenda has been evolving due to circumstances beyond our control (such is politics) but is now finalized.  You will receive more emails over the next few days, but let’s start with the agenda.   Items of note: There is a later start time this year (Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and program at 9:00 a.m. sharp.)  There will be no time to go to restaurants for lunch (see agenda for details on what food will be provided during morning session.)    Special 125th Anniversary Capitol Rotunda event is from 12:00-1:00 p.m. (invite friends: one need not attend LLD to celebrate this event with us.) Appointments with legislative offices begin at 1:30 p.m. with the last scheduled no later than 3:30 p.m. (there are no morning appointments.)  It’s going to be a fun and rewarding (and busy) day as we celebrate 125 years of Wisconsin Libraries and look forward to many more by building relationships—with each...
