Prepare to Be Challenged @ the WLA Conference

While most public libraries now have some sort of process allowing challenges to objectionable works in their collection, the controversy in West Bend, Wisconsin, provides an opportunity to reexamine this process and explore how it can best serve the interests of both the library and concerned patrons.  On Thursday afternoon from 2:15 PM to 3:30 PM, Prepare to Be Challenged  will discuss a survey of the challenge procedures and forms adopted by Wisconsin public libraries.  Using hands-on exercises and role plays, participants will consider the variety of mechanisms currently in place and address such questions as standing to challenge a work in a public library collection, the role of the librarys collection development policy, the make-up of any challenge review committee, the option to appeal the committees determination, compliance with open meeting laws, and the time frame for decision.  By providing a forum for opposing points of view, the challenge process...

The WLA Nominations and Elections Committee announces the candidates running in this fall's association elections. All WLA members will receive ballots next week. Positions open: President-elect:Jessica MacPhail, director of the Racine Public Library, will face Krista Ross, director of the Southwest Wisconsin Library System. Treasurer:Katharine Clark, Library Assistant at Madison Public Library, and Jen Gerber, director at Oscar Grady Public Library, Saukville, will seek the position that has been held by Jan Berg for the past six years. WLA Foundation board representative:Jane Pearlmutter, retired from UW-Madison SOIS, will seek re-election to her seat, with Ann Hanson-Lininger, librarian at Racine Public Library, also running. All positions are for three-year terms that begin January 1, 2013. In addition, WLA units will present slates of candidates for their leadership positions. The theme of this year's WLA conference is "Libraries: For the Common Good".  We all know that libraries are the great social equalizer and that the work we do impacts everyone who walks in our doors. Here's an opportunity to showcase the great work you do, whether it's in your own facility or out in the community.  The WLA conference planning committee will be putting together a slide show of photographs of librarians and libraries building community which will be displayed before Wednesday's keynote address.   I'm looking for photos from YOU!  It can be photos of programs, a display, a community event, your book sale - anything that has to do with libraries and reaching out to your community.
