Over 200 Library Advocates Met With Legislators at the State Capitol

On Tuesday, February 17th, over 200 librarians, trustees and friends of libraries came from communities throughout Wisconsin to discuss library-related issues with their legislators.  “This is the largest turnout of library advocates we have had in many years,” noted Wisconsin Library Association (WLA) President John Pollitz of UW-Eau Claire McIntyre Library.  “Our members recognize the critical role Governor Walker, Superintendent Evers and our legislators have on public libraries, academic libraries, school libraries and others.”  Issues discussed included: -Library funding as affected by the pending State Budget.-The availability and cost of broadband, especially in rural areas of the state.-The essential role that libraries play as the heart of their communities, including help with online job applications, computer access for lower income students and families, and resources for parents who homeschool their children. Library advocates also heard from the following speakers yesterday:  -Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Superintendent Tony Evers.       -Democratic...

What? This immersive 2 1/2 day conference offers librarians an opportunity to learn about current research advancements in science. Three faculty-led sessions on genomics, Great Lakes aquatic ecosystems, and medical chemistry will provide overviews of emerging trends and research methodologies and in-depth descriptions of particular research projects. In addition to these education sessions, the Boot Camp will include lightning talks from attending librarians, a "Librarian's Night Out" for fun and networking, tours of research spaces, a Keynote speaker, and an all-conference reception and banquet dinner. Who’s this for? Academic librarians who provide services to science faculty and students, and want to better understand the needs of these library users. What’s the cost? Larry T. Nix, who has served as Chair of the Wisconsin Library Heritage Center (WLHC) Steering Committee since its establishment in 2008, is leaving the committee. Committee member Paul Nelson will take over as Chair. Also leaving the committee after completing three terms on the committee are Peter Gilbert and Lori Belongia. Continuing members on the committee, in addition to Nelson, are Ruth Ann Montgomery, James Gollata and Louise Robbins. New members joining the committee are Janis Berg, Mary Clark and Steve Platteter. The WLHC is a program of the Wisconsin Library Association Foundation.
