The Wisconsin Library Association is pleased to announce this year’s library luminaries, selected as outstanding for their contribution to libraries and librarianship.Library of the Year: Monona Public Library (Erick Plumb, Acting Library Director)Under the creative leadership of the late library director Demita Gerber and her staff, the Monona Public Library has gone from good to great! The library has launched several innovative programs and initiatives and has developed collections in strategic areas.Marge Loch-Wouters, Youth Services Manager, La Crosse Public Library, is WLA’s DEMCO Librarian of the Year. Marge is well known as a leader in library youth services. Her work has involved networking and partnerships within the community to enhance services for kids. Marge has been active in ALA’s Association for Library Service to Children, particularly as a priority consultant and then board member, in WLA as a WeLead mentor, and in the Wisconsin Women Library Workers. Woodrow Hall Jumpstart Award Announced

Paula Sergi of the Foot of the Lake Poetry Collective in Fond du Lac won first place and $500.00 to collaborate with the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) office, the Association of Commerce, the Fond du Lac Public Library, the Fond du Lac Arts Council, and Park Ridge Organics to bring poetry to the farmers’ markets, the library, the Windhover Center for the Arts and two harvest festivals in the Fond du Lac area. The finalist was Phil Hansotia of Ellison Bay who received $250.00 to create “poetry trails” (poems in display cases mounted on posts) in Newport State Park, a partnership between the Wallace, Unabridged and Word Women poetry groups with the Newport Wilderness Society, Newport State Park, and Sevastapol, Gibraltar and Southern Door high schools. Shoshauna Shy of Woodrow Hall Editions based in Madison created the Woodrow Hall Jumpstart Award, an offshoot of the Poetry Jumps Off the Shelf...

Paul Nelson to Receive WLA President’s Award

Paul Nelson, adjunct assistant professor at UW-Madison SLISand retired director of Middleton Public Library, will receive the WLAPresident’s Award at the WLA Conference Awards & Honors banquet on November3, 2011, at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center.Nelson, who has been in WLA’s legislative leadership formany years and was WLA President in 1998, will end his most recent term as the legislative committee chair atthe end of 2011. His leadership was especially important this year as librariesfaced some of the biggest challenges in memory, including budget cuts tolibrary programs and institutions, threats to WiscNet and the elimination ofmaintenance of effort funding requirements for public libraries.  Nelson’s efforts to keep people informed and motivated to advocatefor libraries extends beyond official legislative alerts and communications.  His “Retiring Guy’s Digest” blog provides hispersonal, behind-the-scenes commentary about library and political activitiesin Wisconsin. The Outreach Services Roundtable has chosen Ruth Sias as the 2011 recipient of the Frances de Usabel award.Ruth Sias is the Children's Librarian at the Goodman South Madison branch of the Madison Public Library. She was chosen for exemplary work with children and families in local hospitals. Ruth was nominated for the award by Dipesh Navsaria, the director of the University of Wisconsin Pediatric Early Literacy Projects.According to Dr. Navsaria, Sias was instrumental in developing an outreach program to promote reading and literacy to children and families at local clinics. In addition to providing direct services, she trained volunteers to engage children and parents in stories using effective modeling and reading techniques. After working closely with hospital and university professionals to make this program successful, she initiated plans to expand the program to reach more families in her service area and beyond. The Steering Committee of the Wisconsin Library Heritage Center, a program of the Wisconsin Library Association Foundation, has selected seven individuals to be inducted into the Wisconsin Library Hall of Fame (WLHF) in 2011. They are Norman D. Bassett (1891-1980), Orilla Thompson Blackshear (1904-1994), Daniel Steele Durrie (1819-1892), Gilson G. Glasier (1873-1972), Ginny Moore Kruse (1934- ), Walter Mcmynn Smith (1869 – 1938), and Ella T. Veslak (1897-1996). Their induction into the WLHF will take place during the Awards & Honors Banquet at the Wisconsin Library Association Conference in Milwaukee on November 3.
