Washington, DC— (November 5, 2012) – The Institute of Museum and Library Services today announced the recipients of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor conferred on museums and libraries for service to the community and celebrates institutions that make a difference for individuals, families, and communities. This year’s honorees exemplify the nation’s great diversity of libraries and museums and include a school library, county library systems, individual libraries, children’s museums, an art museum, science centers, a park conservancy, and more, hailing from 10 different states. The American Library Association’s (ALA) Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP) and the Library & Information Technology Association (LITA) are now soliciting submissions for the best library practices using cutting-edge technology.  Nominations must be submitted by November 6, 2012, and winners will be announced at the upcoming January 2013 ALA Midwinter Meeting. The Wisconsin Library Association (WLA) Paralibrarian of the Year Award recognizes the essential role of paralibrarians, including all library support staff who do not currently have an MLIS, in providing excellent library service in Wisconsin.  This award places special emphasis on efforts to further the role of paralibrarians and library support staff in the library profession. The New Members Roundtable (NMRT) is pleased to announce Sara Bryce, La Crosse Public Library, as the first recipient of the new Rising Star Award. The Rising Star Award was started this year as a way to highlight and recognize a project or accomplishment of a new colleague in our field; ideally the recipient would have worked in a Wisconsin library for five years or fewer. Sara works in the Youth Services Department at La Crosse Public, and in the past year, she led a community grant project to introduce the library to all 2nd graders in the city. She also introduced much needed classroom management techniques to staff and patrons for their "boat" in the Youth Area. Nominations are being accepted for the Gale Cengage Learning Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship.  This $3,000 award honors an individual who has made a significant contribution to business librarianship. Contributions may include, but are not limited to: authorship of a seminal book or articles in business librarianship; development of an imaginative and successful program centered around business within a library; teaching business librarianship in a particularly creative and substantive manner; and displaying strong leadership in a professional association geared to business librarianship.
