This page contains support materials for the Leadership Development Institute. We have uploaded handouts, Power Point slides, bibliographies and case studies here. Hard copies of handout materials will be available on-site for each day of the program. Please note that printed copies of the case studies WILL NOT be available during the program. Please download the case studies to your electronic device or print a copy for your use. Remember that each case study has a list of questions to consider as your review the article.

WLA Mission

The Wisconsin Library Association engages, inspires and advocates for library workers and supporters to improve and promote library services for the people of Wisconsin.

Our Goal

The political and economic environment confronting leaders of libraries has never been more complex and challenging. Today’s library leaders need advanced-level organizational leadership skills. Our goal is to provide participants in our program with real world learning experiences to develop excellent future library leaders who are goal oriented yet agile, creative problem solvers who can navigate through these times of uncertainty, rapid changing technology and shrinking resources.


Program Overview

The Leadership Development Institute provides the tools and insight needed to improve your leadership effectiveness and help your library respond to a rapidly shifting competitive landscape. It is designed for those who must think strategically about emerging institutional and informational needs, changing expectations of library leaders, new technologies, and long-range plans for the library. The curriculum will deepen your insights and broaden your repertoire of useful approaches to leadership. The program also provides a valuable opportunity to assess your own leadership strengths and weaknesses in a supportive and engaging learning environment.

Instructional Design

  • 5 overarching leadership competencies with leaner outcomes
  • Leadership style assessment completed for each attendee
  • 2 ½ day interactive and highly immersive learning event
  • 7-8 Cohort Groups participate in each program
  • Instructors from within and outside of the library industry
  • Focus on decision making, ethics, value and integrity
  • Financial support for attendees from small libraries
  • Upon completion of program participants become part of an electronic community to help continue personal and professional growth
  • Personalized learning experience tailored to individual goals and challenges

Program Cost

  • $300 for WLA members and $375 for non-members (Covers cost of meals and conference materials)
